The New Tax BOMB for salaried class in Pakistan !!!

CRAZY AS IT MAY SOUND!  the new tax regulations for the salaried class in Pakistan have introduced significant changes, often referred to as a "tax bomb." These changes, effective from July 1, 2023, are part of the amended Finance Bill 2023, aiming to increase government revenue amidst economic challenges.

Key Changes in Tax Rates:

  1. Tax Exemptions and Initial Slabs:

    • Annual income up to Rs. 600,000 remains tax-free.
    • Income from Rs. 600,001 to Rs. 1,200,000 is taxed at 2.5% of the amount exceeding Rs. 600,000 (FM World Pakistan) (Pakistan Today).
  2. Middle Income Slabs:

    • For income between Rs. 1,200,001 to Rs. 2,400,000, a fixed tax of Rs. 15,000 plus 12.5% on the amount exceeding Rs. 1,200,000 applies.
    • Income between Rs. 2,400,001 and Rs. 3,600,000 will see a tax of Rs. 165,000 plus 20% on the amount exceeding Rs. 2,400,000 (FM World Pakistan).
  3. Higher Income Slabs:

    • For income between Rs. 3,600,001 and Rs. 6,000,000, the tax is Rs. 405,000 plus 25% on the amount exceeding Rs. 3,600,000.
    • Those earning above Rs. 6,000,000 will face Rs. 1,095,000 plus 35% on the amount exceeding Rs. 6,000,000 (Pakistan Today) (INCPak).

Impact on Salaried Individuals:

These changes mean that higher earners will see a substantial increase in their tax liabilities. For example, individuals earning between Rs. 500,000 to Rs. 1,000,000 per month will pay an annual fixed tax of Rs. 1,005,000 plus 32.5% on the amount exceeding Rs. 500,000 monthly (INCPak). This restructuring is expected to put considerable financial pressure on the salaried class, potentially reducing their disposable income and affecting their overall economic well-being.

Rationale and Criticisms:

The government, under pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), aims to broaden the tax base and increase revenue. However, there are concerns about the equitable distribution of the tax burden and the potential negative impact on the salaried middle and upper-middle class (ProPakistani) (INCPak).
